  Bread Pudding  

This classic Southern dessert is a delicious way to use up stale bread.

1 1/2 cups milk
1/2 cup 35% whipping cream
4 cups stale bread cut in cubes
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1/2 cup raisins

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix milk, cream, eggs, and vanilla with a whisk. Pour milk mix over bread cubes and mix well. Add the sugar, spices, and raisins and mix well. Pour into a lightly buttered 8 inch square baking dish and bake for 25 minutes until golden and set. Serve plain or with a rum sauce.

Rum Sauce

1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
Rum to taste, about 1/4 cup (can substitute 2 teaspoons rum extract)

Mix all ingredients except the butter in a saucepan and whisk together well. Add butter and stir over low heat until melted and mixed well. Serve warm over bread pudding.
